Why does hip drop even matter?
Contralateral hip drop typically occurs in mid stance, where the hip drops on the opposite side.
The lateral hip musculature will work to keep the pelvis level.
Limited control in this region is typically noted during this phase as this is where most loads are imparted on the body.
However, contrary to popular belief, it is not necessarily due to lack of hip strength.
It can happen from a multitude of reasons.
One of those being more of a motor coordination thing.
In cases where a runners has knee pain, you may see this type of pattern happen. This has happened plenty of times when I do an instrumented gait analysis where I can actually measure those details.
In Kerr’s case, while you will see plenty of ankle eversion here, you notice that the knees and hips stay relatively stacked and coordinated.
However, a back view would be helpful to further clarify that comment.
Now, is there something wrong with running with hip drop?
I will talk more about that next week.
