A new ride at Alton Towers, set inside the ruined mansion, and called Hex, is built around a folklore tale of a cursed oak tree. The Earl of Shrewsbury had refused to help an old woman, so she claimed that every branch that fell from the tree would signal the death of a member of the Earls bloodline. Sure enough, that night, a branch fell, and a family member died.
The Earl ordered that the tree be wrapped in chains to stop any further branches falling. 200 years on, the oak tree still stands today, and the chains still dangle. rusted, from its branches....
