The Coup of 18 Brumaire marked the end of the French Revolution. Returning from his Egyptian campaign, Napoleon Bonaparte joined with political allies to overthrow the unpopular Directory, which had been weakened by corruption, economic problems, and ongoing wars. Although Napoleon initially faced resistance from members of the legislature, the coup succeeded after loyal troops dispersed the opposition. A new government known as the Consulate was established, with Napoleon serving as First Consul, effectively making him the dominant ruler of France.
