The Battle of Brooklyn Heights, also known as the Battle of Long Island, was fought during the American War of Independence on August 27, 1776, and was the first major battle following the Declaration of Independence. The British executed a flanking maneuver that nearly trapped the American forces, and inflicted heavy casualties. Despite the defeat, Washington managed a brilliant nighttime evacuation across the East River under cover of fog, saving most of his army.
