J. R. R. Tolkien served as a British Army officer during World War I, an experience that profoundly affected his life and later writing. Commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Lancashire Fusiliers, Tolkien was sent to France in 1916 and served as a signals officer during the Battle of the Somme, one of the bloodiest campaigns of the war. He experienced the horrors of trench warfare and lost several of his closest friends during the conflict. In October 1916, he contracted trench fever and was evacuated to England, effectively ending his frontline service.
