Every outdoor finish needs maintenance. I built and finished this tabletop back in 2022, and every spring I spend about 30 minutes freshening it up with a new coat of Totalboat Gleam spar varnish. Time well spent.
This table has been sitting on my Mom’s deck down at the Jersey Shore since 2022, exposed to the elements, and it still looks great.
One key tip: if you’re finishing an outdoor table, always use the Gleam gloss for your first 4 coats—even if you want a satin finish. Gloss offers better UV and weather protection. You can always switch to satin for the final coat.
Also, wood choice matters. Sapele has been my go-to for outdoor builds—it’s stable, durable, and the grain speaks for itself.
A little upkeep goes a long way.
