I often prefer wooden drawer slides over metal mechanical ones—for a few good reasons. First, they’re inexpensive and can usually be made from wood you may already have in the shop. Second, when properly fitted, wooden slides can last a lifetime—in my experience, they often outlast even the best mechanical alternatives.
In this project, I built a custom mobile cabinet around a set of drawers gifted to me by my friend Jeff from Greene Street Joinery. Since the drawers were free, I let them dictate the cabinet’s dimensions and overall design.
Inside, I customized the drawer interiors to organize painting panels, making the cabinet perfect for my upstairs barn art studio. It’s set on wheels for easy movement around the space, and the dedicated storage keeps small paintings neatly organized while they dry.
