If you’ve followed any of my projects over the last 15 years, you've probably noticed one familiar tool making frequent appearances — my hand plane. It’s not some rare collector’s piece or boutique brand with exotic wood handles. Nope. It’s a humble Stanley block plane I picked up from the local hardware store back in 1987.
This little tool has followed me through it all: construction sites, weekend DIY projects, and more hours than I can count right here in the shop. While I’ve added new tools to the collection over the years, this plane remains one of my most reliable go-tos.
There’s something about a tool you’ve grown with — one that’s worn in just right, always sharp, always ready, and never lets you down.
So, do you really need more than one hand plane? Maybe. But most times it's that, one well-used tool that never lets you down.
