Our partners, Wildlife SOS have rescued another dancing bear. Her name is Gracie, and she has spent her entire life in captivity. Blind in one eye from past abuse, she has been forced to dance for more than a decade!
We are hoping to raise $60,000 to give her the lifetime of care and rehabilitation she now needs!
Gracie is believed to be around twelve years old. That means her mother was likely killed many years ago, and Gracie was taken as a cub to be exploited as a dancing bear.
Like so many sloth bears before her, Gracie has suffered unimaginable cruelty. Her muzzle was pierced with a hot iron rod and a coarse rope forced through the wound. Her teeth were smashed out. She was beaten, broken and made dependent on humans, all so she could be controlled.
She never had the chance to learn how to live like a bear.
Cases of dancing bears are thankfully very rare now, especially after we helped end the dancing bear trade alongside Our partners, Wildlife SOS in 2009. But isolated illegal cases still happen. And when they do, we must be there for bears like Gracie.
We made a promise to the dancing bears that we would never abandon them. That promise still stands.
Gracie is now in the care of our partners, Wildlife SOS at their bear sanctuary in Agra, but her condition is fragile and she will need long-term support to help her heal. She has a long road ahead, and that future is only possible with help from people who care.
