Mama Yuni had two young orangutans beside her: juvenile Yuni and tiny Pura, still an infant.
For months, this small family had survived in fragments of forest surrounded by farmland.
Then the fires came.
The remaining forest corridor they relied on was burned away. Their food disappeared. Their route to safety was cut off. With fires still blazing nearby and smoke hanging heavily in the air, Mama Yuni and her youngsters were left trapped in plantations dangerously close to human settlements.
She had two young lives depending on her.
But nowhere safe left to take them.
A joint Ministry of Forestry team, including BKSDA West Kalimantan and Gunung Palung National Park, worked alongside our partners, YIARI, and local community members to get this family to safety.
The rescue took around eight hours. Once all three had been safely anaesthetised and given veterinary checks, they faced a further five-hour journey by land and water to reach the protected forests of Gunung Palung National Park.
There, together, they were released back into the wild.
Mama Yuni, Yuni and Pura are free now.
But the fires have not stopped.
Other orangutans could be losing their food, shelter and escape routes right now. Reaching them takes trained teams, specialist equipment, veterinary care, vehicles, boats and hours of painstaking work alongside the authorities.
Mama Yuni and her young were reached in time.
