I used to watch the symphony with terror in my chest,
Not for the violins, but for the bassoonist
That long curved tower swaying in their grip,
One wrong breath, one shaky hand
It’s a very expensive slip.

’Cause I’d see that bassoon falling in slow-motion dreams,
Cracking keys and splintered reeds and catastrophic scenes.
Every quiet passage felt like gravity’s trap
Till somebody told me about the bassoon strap.

Leather over shoulder, steady as could be,
A little strap of common sense to protect wood and keys.
No plunge, no panic, no orchestral mishap,
Just calm and careful breathing and a beautifully placed strap.

Now I watch the symphony with nothing left to fear,
No shattered wood nightmares ringing in my ear.
The music swells, the bassoons sing back
And peace comes softly to me
Because of the bassoon strap.
