Preparing Laurel Canyon Before the Next Emergency
Los Angeles Fire Chief Jaime Moore joined Mayor Karen Bass, City leaders and members of the Laurel Canyon community for the annual State of the Canyon meeting, hosted by We Are Laurel Canyon.
Residents of Laurel Canyon and surrounding hillside communities face unique challenges during wildfires, including narrow roads, limited evacuation routes, steep terrain and heavy vegetation. Chief Moore spoke about the importance of preparing before an emergency occurs — from creating defensible space and knowing evacuation routes to having a plan for your family and being ready to leave when instructed.
The discussion also looked beyond wildfire season to the potential for significant winter storms, including the threat of flooding, mud and debris flows in hillside communities. Preparation for these emergencies requires coordination between residents, firefighters, law enforcement, utilities and other City departments.
