HARBOR GATEWAY - LAFD firefighters handled a major emergency commercial fire at 16208 S Vermont Ave in the early morning of August 10, 2025, when outside fire exposed a 300’ x 200’ commercial building. Conditions quickly changed, forcing firefighters to transition from offensive to defensive operations after the flames extended into the attic, a small explosion occurred, and the roof showed signs of compromise.
Over 144 LAFD firefighters worked for 5 hours in defensive mode to contain the fire to the one-story portion of the building, addressing hazards including a large number of burning lead-acid batteries and a subterranean electrical vault. Multiple city utility agencies, including LADWP, coordinated with LAFD commanders to ensure safety for both the community and firefighters. LAFD HazMat specialists monitored air quality and water runoff throughout the incident.
Fire cause is under active investigation — no injuries reported.
