In the afternoon of April 7, 2026, the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to two significant structure fires in the West Bureau neighborhoods of Beverly Crest and Hollywood.
At 1:45 PM, a two-story, 23,000-square-foot mansion in Beverly Crest was reported with light smoke showing from the second floor. Firefighters located fire in the attic and coordinated simultaneous roof ventilation, fire suppression, and salvage operations. All occupants and workers on the property were accounted for, and no injuries were initially reported.
The home's heavy construction contributed to access challenges, and conditions in the attic intensified -- fire and heat caused a partial chimney collapse and prompted the attachment of several additional fire companies for support. Assistance from utility and law enforcement partners -- including LADWP, LADOT, LADBS, the gas company, and LAPD -- was also requested. LAFD Assistant Chief Tyler Dixon assumed Incident Command, and crews worked to contain fire in multiple areas of the home's attic while continuing salvage efforts on the floors below.
Approximately 160 LAFD personnel were assigned at the peak of the incident, ultimately classifying the response as a Major Emergency. While the size of the fire itself required the coordination of many fire companies, personnel safety was also a consideration: the day's heat made firefighter relief and rehabilitation resources crucial. Over the course of the four-hour firefight, two LAFD members were transported with medical issues. As structural stability also became a concern, Incident Command ordered firefighters out of the interior and off of the roof -- companies transitioned to a defensive posture, continuing fire suppression from the exterior of the home and ensuring the protection of neighboring structures.
After several hours, crews were able to safely re-enter portions of the structure and resume offensive operations, accessing and extinguishing remaining pockets of fire. Knockdown was declared just before 6:00 PM, with an extended overhaul operation expected.
Just before knockdown was declared in Beverly Crest, a 911 call reported fire at The Magic Castle, a three-story Victorian building in the Hollywood Hills. Fire in the attic of this world-famous landmark prompted an aggressive initial attack, with crews again coordinating ventilation, suppression, and salvage operations. Building management had begun evacuating occupants prior to LAFD arrival, and no injuries were reported. This fire was contained in just over 40 minutes with 68 firefighters working on scene.
