How has support for vaccine production in Africa evolved over the past four years, and what is needed to ensure long-term sustainability? This World Health Summit 2025 workshop examined progress made since the launch of the Partnership for African Vaccine Manufacturing (now the Platform for Harmonized African Health Product Manufacturing) and explored the critical next steps for strengthening regional manufacturing capacity.
The session highlighted achievements in expanding local production, the growing mandate of regional institutions, and efforts to close gaps in regulatory systems, financing, and talent development. Speakers discussed how shifting donor priorities and limited budgets create challenges for scaling and sustaining manufacturing initiatives. The conversation emphasized the need for coordinated investments, strategic planning, and strong public-private collaboration to avoid duplication and ensure that emerging projects reinforce each other.
Participants reflected on pathways to improve sustainability, including long-term market shaping, workforce development, and strengthened partnerships between African governments, industry, and global health organizations.
This workshop was part of the World Health Summit 2025 in Berlin and was co-hosted by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development of Germany (BMZ).
