When I first laid eyes on this gorgeous Sulawesi Pitta, it literally took my breath away. It was such a pleasure to be able to admire this jewel of the forest quietly and for a prolonged duration of time.
It appeared to be in a pensive mood, pausing frequently and foraging only occasionally. The latter it did expertly, pulling out earthworms with a flourish.
Its plumage colours are astonishingly vivid; bright outrageous red over its belly contrasting starkly with bluish-green over its upper back. A broad neon blue chest band bordered boldly with black added to its regal look.
Sulawesi Pittas are inhabitants of lowland primary & secondary forests. They are endemic to Sulawesi. Although its conservation status has not reached worrying levels, its population is declining due to habitat loss.
