Sugar Ray Robinson faced Ralph “Tiger” Jones on 19.01.1955 at the Chicago Stadium in Chicago, Illinois. Robinson was in his second fight of a comeback campaign following a 30‑month retirement from professional boxing. Ralph Jones, who had lost his previous five bouts, entered the contest as a significant underdog against the living legend.
From the opening round, Jones took the initiative and maintained constant pressure on Robinson. By the second round, Robinson was bleeding from a cut on his nose and another over his right eyelid. Jones consistently outworked Robinson on the inside, landing heavy combinations and forcing the former multi-division champion into the ropes throughout the fight. Robinson attempted to rally in the middle rounds, but Jones’s aggressive stalking and head movement neutralized his attacks. After ten rounds, all three judges scored the fight unanimously in favor of Ralph “Tiger” Jones, handing Robinson one of the most unexpected defeats of his career.
