As Crystal Mall emptied out in recent years, many people wondered what would happen to the sprawling property on Route 85 in Waterford. The answer was eventually found at the manufacturing powerhouse based about five miles east.

After acquiring the mall property last year, submarine builder General Dynamics Electric Boat is converting it into a campus with offices, as well as areas for training and testing.

The transformation was hailed at a groundbreaking ceremony on Friday by Electric Boat executives and elected officials, the latest milestone for a company that aims to hire 8,000 people this year to meet surging demand from the U.S. Navy.
