These days, buying drugs from illicit supply is like going to the grocery store for milk, only to pour a glass to find it's actually orange juice. At least, that’s how some people have described the uncertainty to staff with Yale New Haven’s Community Health Care Van.

The van has provided adult primary care since 1993, traveling throughout New Haven about five days a week. Since 2022, its services have also included drug checking. The program is free, confidential and not connected to law enforcement.

Here, a staff member with Yale New Haven’s Community Health Care Van demonstrates how the drug-checking equipment works and how people can test substances at home.
