Most gut infection testing still relies on culture and microscopy. This type of testing developed decades before we understood how complex the microbiome actually is. The problem isn't just sensitivity. It's that the majority of gut microorganisms can't be grown in a lab at all, which means culture-based testing is structurally blind to a large portion of what's actually living in your gut. DNA-based testing through 16S rRNA sequencing or shotgun metagenomics identifies organisms directly from their genetic material, no culturing required. That means infections, anaerobes, slow-growers, and organisms present in low abundance all become visible. For gut testing insights this is incredibly relevant!
