Has the heat of the summer taken its toll on your garden right now? Do you need some top gardening tips from an expert? In this latest instalment of STIHL’s garden guides, we caught up with professional gardener, Jane Moore, to find out the best garden ideas for summer.

Jane Moore is a professional gardener with a horticulture career that spans 30 years. Working at The Bath Priory, she won the prestigious Relais & Chateaux Garden Trophy in 2014 and manages and develops a 1.6 hectare garden at the 4-star hotel.

Jane already shared her expertise with us earlier this year in the Spring Garden Guide where she showed us around her garden and gave us her advice on Spring gardening, so now she is going to give us her tips for summer.

The first garden job Jane shows us is lifting potatoes. Be sure to regularly check that your potatoes are not suffering from blight, as the deadly disease can put an end to your potato growing season! If you notice blight early on, you can chop the tops off to stop it growing right into the potato and ruin your crops. One great thing about potato growing is they are like buried treasure, you never know what you are going to get until you dig them up! Potato growing is a great crop for beginners, as you nearly always get good results. They are also a great crop for poor soils as they help to break it up, leaving you with crumbly soil. A great benefit of lifting your potatoes is that it leaves you extra room for more planting.

It was bad news for Jane this year as her freshly planted apple tree suffered during a warm spell of weather. The tree thought its days were numbered so started to reproduce itself, resulting in lots of apples growing. Luckily Jane helped it to conserve its energy by removing the apples and put it back into leaf and root growth. Next year should give her a lovely crop of apples and leave her garden looking blooming beautiful.

Be sure to watch out for caterpillars when planting new plants as they will nibble on the leaves. The caterpillars from the small white butterfly have a nasty tendency to hide in the middle of the plant, disguised so well you won’t be able to notice it!

Taking plant cuttings during the summer as they will root well and it’s also the time to think about the plants you like the most. When taking cuttings from your plant, be careful not to touch the cut ends as you can introduce pathogens. Once you have filled your pot with cuttings, give it a little water and place it on a windowsill that is not too sunny. Cuttings should take around 3-4 weeks to root and once they have rooted properly, you should see the roots appear through the holes in the pot. Once they have rooted, remove them and repot them individually.

Summer is a great time to sow your favourite seeds. You can just scatter seeds directly from some plants, such as foxgloves, directly into your borders. If you would rather save the seeds, a handy gardening tip is to leave the flower heads on a piece of paper and collect the seeds as they fall out. That way you can sow them where you like.

Jane also knows how to make the most of her herb garden, with a little visit from the Two Thirsty Gardeners – check out the thirst-quenching garden cocktail they whipped up for her at the end of the video!
