STIHL GB | How to Mix Fuel for Your Garden Power Tools | STIHL Fuel Mixing Guide | STIHL GB @STIHLGB | Uploaded November 2021 | Updated October 2024, 2 hours ago.
All STIHL hand held 2-stroke machines require a 2-stroke fuel mix comprising of petrol and engine oil. If you’re unsure whether your STIHL machine is a 2-stroke or a 4-stroke model, consult your user manual or the STIHL.co.uk website. In this video we’ll share handy tips to help you mix fuel for your STIHL garden power tools.
The fuel mix ratio for all STIHL 2-stroke machines is 50:1, in other words, 50 parts petrol to 1 part oil. It’s important to get this correct as too much engine oil could lead to excessive smoke from the exhaust and a black oily spark plug. Too little engine oil will cause the engine to overheat and seize.
If you’d like to skip the fuel mixing process, and also benefit from a long 5-year shelf life, STIHL MotoMix is the ideal product. Pre-mixed with our highest quality HP Ultra oil, STIHL MotoMix contains no ethanol meaning it lasts significantly longer than conventional fuel.

If you are planning on mixing your own fuel and oil, you can buy STIHL HP oils separately. For the best engine lubrication and corrosion protection, we recommend STIHL HP Ultra although we also have STIHL HP and HP Super. To work out how much oil is needed take your amount of petrol in litres and divide this by 50. For example, if you have 5 litres of fuel divide this by 50 to get 0.1 litres, or 100ml. Our STIHL app has a handy fuel mix calculator that will work this out for you in a flash.

STIHL engine oils are available in a variety of quantities, ranging from 20ml to 10 litres. Our 100ml one shots are the exact amount required for 5 litres of petrol, working perfectly with our 5 litre petrol canisters or combi canister. If you’ve bought your engine oil in larger quantities, our measuring jug or mixing bottle can be used to quickly measure the correct amount of fuel. Alternatively, some of our 1 litre bottles even come with an integrated measuring container!
Once you’re happy with the desired quantities it’s time to mix the fuel. Pick a location far away from any ignition sources, pour the engine oil into an approved canister, then add the required amount of fresh fuel. It can help to use a funnel to reduce spillages. Close the lid and gently shake the canister to thoroughly mix the petrol and engine oil. It’s important to avoid breathing in fumes and be careful to avoid contact with the skin throughout this process. We recommend wearing protective gloves.

The fuel mix is now ready to go. Store the fuel canister in a cool location away from the sun and use within 30 days. Using stale fuel with your STIHL machine will cause performance issues so it’s best to only mix enough fuel for a few weeks work at a time.
