I was inspired to make something that sounded like you were on the deck of a spaceship, with the hum of engines and the whoosh of the life support working. Also because it came out on the day I started work on the track, I decided to make heavy use of Arturia's brand new Filter MS-20, and it will certainly be making regular appearances in my music in the future.
I added some sequenced electric piano over the ambience, drenching in reverb to make it more "Space Ambient".
In making this 1-Hour Edit, I tightened up some of the sounds and tuned the master processing a little, and as a result I think this sounds better than the Radio Edit.
Process Notes:
I gave myself some rules in making this track, as that helps focus my mind to create to a deadline. I decided to:
- feature the Filter MS-20
- limit myself to only one compressor and one reverb
- in addition, I also added a ShimmerVerb "send" as an experimental technique to organically add in more texture in the higher frequencies by routing several of the key tracks there throughout
- I also tried a new (to me) technique of adding a HalfTime "send", and routing high pitched impulses to it to add the lower harmonics
- In a first for me, I also routed some of the output of the HalfTime "send" BACK into itself as an experiment to add more depth and richness to the tone
I am very happy with the engine room sound texture, and I plan to release that is its own ambient/drone track next year :)
