Spouter Geyser (2024)
Geysers are hot springs that episodically erupt columns of water. They occur in few places on Earth. The highest concentration of geysers anywhere is at the Yellowstone Hotspot Volcano in northwestern Wyoming, USA.
Spouter Geyser is a fountain-type geyser located in the Black Sand Basin of Yellowstone's Upper Geyser Basin. Its subcircular basin is about 7 x 8 meters in size. Bright white geyserite covers the basin floor and consists in part of low to moderately low mounded, closely-packed columnar geyserite masses. The centrally-located vent is irregular in shape and about 0.5 x 1 meter in size. Eruptions are frequent and usually one to two hours in duration. True intervals (= eruption end to next eruption start) are about two hours. Partial fill-and-drain events precede eruptions. Two principal runoff channels exist - one drains water westward to Iron Spring Creek. The other drains to the north toward Opalescent Pool, then heads west toward the creek.
A small “side vent” is located about 7 meters ~south of Spouter Geyser’s central vent. It starts erupting a little after the commencement of a Spouter eruption.
In 1998, researcher measured the temperature of Spouter Geyser’s water at 87 degrees Celsius, with a pH of 8.14 (slightly alkaline).
