Dome Geyser (2017)
Geysers are hot springs that episodically erupt columns of water. They occur in few places on Earth. The highest concentration of geysers anywhere is at the Yellowstone Hotspot Volcano (northwestern Wyoming, USA).
Dome Geyser is the easternmost and elevationally highest member of the Geyser Hill Group in Yellowstone’s Upper Geyser Basin. As the name suggests, this geyser consists of an erupting vent atop a broad, circular geyserite dome that is about 40 to 45 meters in diameter, similar in size to the (apparently) unnamed dome immediately northeast of nearby Anemone Geyser. The irregularly-shaped vent is 2.5 to 3 meters across. This geyser has radial drainage. Eruption runoff eventually percolates downward into geyserite/siliceous sinter sediments, or drains into a small pond on the northern side, or flows into Giantess Geyser’s runoff channels.
Dome Geyser is known to have years-long dormancies. It currently has activity in the form of a series of eruptions separated by about 1 to 3 weeks (8 to 19 days). During 2016, closed eruption intervals within a series ranged from 13 to about 33 minutes. Initial eruptions can have relatively high spouting. Subsequent eruptions involve energetic boiling and low to moderately low surging and doming of water. Eruptions last about 5 minutes. A water analysis done in 1998 showed a temperature of 90° Celsius and a pH of 7.35 (nearly neutral).
