Geysers are hot springs that episodically erupt columns of water. They occur in few places on Earth. The highest concentration of geysers anywhere is at the Yellowstone Hotspot Volcano in northwestern Wyoming, USA.
Slit Geyser is a rarely erupting feature in the western Sapphire Group (“Biscuit Basin”) of Yellowstone’s Upper Geyser Basin. It is located in the Silver Globe Complex, which consists of Silver Globe Pool, Silver Globe Geyser, Silver Globe Cave Geyser, Silver Globe Pair Geyser, and Slit Geyser (also known as Silver Globe Slit Geyser). Slit erupts from two small vents on the western side of a moderately-small, shallow basin (it was a puddle when seen in August 2020). Eruptions were reported in 1984, 1985, 1993, 2008, 2010, 2013, and 2020. In August 2025, Slit was seen active again. Biscuit Basin’s boardwalks were closed to tourists in the 2nd half of 2024 and all of 2025, but Slit eruptions were observed from the Artemisia Trail and from the Stock Bridge Trail. Three Slit eruptions were reported on 4 and 5 August 2025. Durations were about two minutes. One interval (= eruption start to eruption start) was obtained - 2 hours and 37 minutes. As in 2020, a smaller side vent also erupted. In the half-minute preceding these Slit Geyser eruptions, nearby Silver Globe Pair Geyser erupted.
