The Supermarine Spitfire and the North American P-51 Mustang are two of the most iconic allied warbirds from World War II (if not THE most iconic warplanes), so to get a chance to see them flying together in a combined show is quite a unique opportunity!

There are still a few of these flying around, but it's not that many, and you don't often get to see them perform together, let alone flying tight formation and aerobatics, a really amazing experience! :DDD

Flygfesten is a big airshow in Europe, attracting around 50.000 attendees. Flygfesten is an eventful weekend with world class pilots and airplanes. Flygfesten has been organized every three to four years since the re-launch in 1986. It is held in Sweden by Västerdalarnas Aero Club, located in Dala-Järna in Vansbro municipality, with about 7000 inhabitants.

Although the air show is the major focal area, Flygfesten aims to make the show more than just a regular flight display but a festival, where Saturday’s and Sunday’s air show are complemented with evening entertainment during Friday and Saturday night in the form of dance, rock, disco and fun fair.

Flygfesten is a non-profit arrangement and is held to promote the activity of the club in particular and to aviation in general. It offers a good forum for aviation enthusiasts to meet other like minded, while it is a fine opportunity for the Club to recruit new members.

The Supermarine Spitfire is a British single-seat fighter aircraft used by the Royal Air Force and other Allied countries before, during, and after World War II. Many variants of the Spitfire were built, from the Mk 1 to the Rolls-Royce Griffon engined Mk 24 using several wing configurations and guns. It was the only British fighter produced continuously throughout the war, and the Spitfire remains popular among enthusiasts, around 70 remain airworthy, and many more are static exhibits in aviation museums throughout the world.

The Spitfire was designed as a short-range, high-performance interceptor aircraft by R. J. Mitchell, chief designer at Supermarine Aviation Works, which operated as a subsidiary of Vickers-Armstrong from 1928. Mitchell developed the Spitfire's distinctive elliptical wing with innovative sunken rivets (designed by Beverley Shenstone) to have the thinnest possible cross-section, achieving a potential top speed greater than that of several contemporary fighter aircraft, including the Hawker Hurricane. Mitchell continued to refine the design until his death in 1937, whereupon his colleague Joseph Smith took over as chief designer, overseeing the Spitfire's development through many variants.

The North American Aviation P-51 Mustang is an American long-range, single-seat fighter and fighter-bomber used during World War II and the Korean War, among other conflicts. The Mustang was designed in April 1940 by a team headed by James H. Kindelberger of North American Aviation (NAA) in response to a requirement of the British Purchasing Commission. The Purchasing Commission approached North American Aviation to build Curtiss P-40 fighters under license for the Royal Air Force (RAF). Rather than build an old design from another company, North American Aviation proposed the design and production of a more modern fighter. The prototype NA-73X airframe was rolled out on 9 September 1940, 102 days after the contract was signed, and first flew on 26 October.

The Mustang was designed to use the Allison V-1710 engine, which had limited high-altitude performance in its earlier variants. The aircraft was first flown operationally by the RAF as a tactical-reconnaissance aircraft and fighter-bomber. Replacing the Allison with a Rolls-Royce Merlin resulted in the P-51B/C model, and transformed the aircraft's performance at altitudes above 4600 m without sacrificing range, allowing it to compete with the Luftwaffe's fighters. The definitive version, the P-51D, was powered by the Packard V-1650-7, a license-built version of the two-speed, two-stage-supercharged Merlin 66, and was armed with six .50 caliber (12.7 mm) AN/M2 Browning machine guns. Mustang pilots claimed to have destroyed 4950 enemy aircraft.
