The festival of Pero Palo takes place in Villanueva de la Vera (Cáceres- Extremadura-Spain) every Shrove Tuesday. It takes place on the Sunday and Tuesday of Carnival, generally the three days before Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent. (Note - I can't endorce the rough treatment of the donkey but I find these old world spectacles facinating.)
