A Roman Catholic church in New York that served generations of immigrants has been saved by an anonymous $20 million gift, church officials say.
The Archdiocese of New York announced Wednesday that the gift is to be split three ways, the New York Post reported. Half of the gift, $10 million, is to pay for rehabilitation of St. Brigid's Church; $2 million is to provide the church with an endowment; and $8 million will go for the parish school and other needy parochial schools.
Construction began at St. Brigid's, a large Gothic church in the Lower East Side neighborhood, in 1848. The parish was mostly Irish for many years and more recently has been predominantly Hispanic.
The church closed in 2001, and the archdiocese had been planning to demolish it. A group from the parish was fighting to save the building.
