Hiroki Totoki, President and CEO of Sony Group, stated in the context of the PS5 and memory shortages that:
"There is no need to aggressively sell consoles right now."
He described the current situation, where the PlayStation 5 console is in the latter half of its lifecycle, as "fortunate," and explained that the focus is on recurring revenue from the current user base rather than aggressive sales of the console itself. Sony Says Selling More PS5s Is Now Secondary To Getting Its Players To Spend More Sony says "reasonable consumers" know they don’t own the digital PlayStation games they buy.
It argues that it's "not plausible" to suggest that when they buy a digital game they actually believe they're "obtaining ownership" of it. Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki confirmed that the company is no longer “aggressively marketing” the PlayStation 5, saying it’s not necessary now that the console is in the later stages of its life cycle. According to Digital Foundry John Linneman, many of devs and publisher people are upset with Sony.
