This Sonic the Hedgehog commercial from 1991 is such a clever piece of early Sega marketing weirdness. Character actor Larry Cedar plays Danita Stokes, the fictional president of a made up group called Humans Against Genesis, delivering a mock complaint about how dangerous and addictive Sonic supposedly was. It is obviously satire, using the same trick as those fake outraged spokesperson ads where the joke is that the more upset the fictional critic gets, the cooler the product looks to everyone watching. Sega leaned into this kind of humor a lot in the early 90s to build Sonic's rebellious anti-Nintendo image right from the very start of the character's life. Seeing this so early in Sonic's history really shows how deliberate Sega was about making their mascot feel edgy and fast compared to Mario's more wholesome vibe. It is a fun reminder that gaming ads used to get genuinely creative and weird instead of just showing gameplay footage. Did you ever see this commercial air back in 1991?
