Time to blast off with a real Atari 2600 gem. Cosmic Ark hit the scene in 1982, and while the commercial calls it an Atari game, it was actually made by Imagic, one of the top third party studios of the day, known for those shiny silver boxes. It was designed by Rob Fulop, the same guy behind the smash hit Demon Attack. The story picks up after the city of Atlantis is destroyed, with the survivors escaping aboard the Cosmic Ark. You bounce between two jobs. First you defend the ark from meteors raining in from all four sides, then you fly a little shuttle down to alien planets to scoop up pairs of creatures with a tractor beam. Here is the coolest part. Fulop built the whole game just to show off a twinkling starfield background that everyone thought was impossible on the 2600.
