This is one of the greatest game commercials ever made and the comment on it says it all, everyone refuses to believe it was real. Mario, Donkey Kong, Pikachu and Yoshi skip through a field of sunflowers in big plush costumes while Happy Together by The Turtles plays, and then Mario just kicks Yoshi's leg out for no reason and the whole thing explodes into a brawl. The narrator goes something has gone wrong in the happy go lucky world of Nintendo, and it ends on that classic N64 slogan, Get N or Get Out. Sweet costumes, a sappy love song, and total violence. No wonder it stuck in everyone's brain.
The game behind it has a wild origin. Super Smash Bros. did not start as a Nintendo game at all. Masahiro Sakurai and Satoru Iwata quietly built a prototype called Dragon King, a fighting game with generic no name characters, without Nintendo's blessing, because they figured a brand new fighting series would be a tough sell. The Nintendo mascots got added later, and that is the exact thing that made it a phenomenon.
It also reinvented how fighting games work. Forget draining a health bar. Here every hit builds up a damage percentage, and the higher your percent climbs the farther you go flying, so you win by launching your opponents clean off the stage. Twelve characters, four player chaos, dead simple controls, and it flipped the whole genre on its head.
It came out in 1999, sold around five million copies on the N64, and kicked off one of the biggest franchises Nintendo has ever had, running all the way to Smash Ultimate today. Not bad for a game that was almost never Nintendo at all.
