Behind this trippy little commercial is one of the wildest legal wars in gaming history. Tetris was created back in 1984 by Alexey Pajitnov inside a Soviet government computer center, which meant the rights were owned by the USSR itself. That turned licensing it into an absolute nightmare of competing claims.
Then it got messy. In May 1989 Atari's label Tengen put out their own NES version of Tetris, convinced they had the rights. They did not. Nintendo had gone straight to the Soviet authorities and locked up the exclusive console rights. Nintendo won the fight, and Atari was forced to recall and destroy their version after only about four weeks on shelves, with fewer than a hundred thousand copies sold. Here is the part that still stings collectors. Reviewers at the time thought the recalled Tengen version was the better game, with a two player mode and more features, while the Nintendo version everyone actually ended up with was the simpler one. That destroyed Tengen cart is now a rare collector's item. This whole saga even became a movie in 2023.
The commercial closes on that famous silver Now You're Playing With Power tag, and fun fact, Nintendo's records show that exact end card first started appearing on Tetris. As for the game, it went on to become one of the best selling franchises of all time, with hundreds of millions of copies sold and billions of mobile downloads.
And like the caption says, the Tetris Effect is a real thing. Play long enough and you start seeing falling blocks everywhere, mentally rotating and fitting real objects together, sometimes even in your dreams. It is a proper documented example of how a game can rewire your brain. Simple, universal, and probably the one game that truly everyone has played.
