This Commodore 64 version of Mario Bros is such an underrated piece of the Mario timeline. Ocean Software published it back in 1987, licensing the original 1983 Nintendo arcade game for the European market on cassette and disk. What makes this version stand out is the music, since composer Fred Gray wrote a completely different soundtrack instead of using Yukio Kaneoka's original arcade tunes. The controls also feel noticeably different here, you actually have to push the joystick the opposite direction just to stop moving, which throws a lot of players off if they learned on the arcade version first. Ocean actually had a solid reputation for arcade-perfect Donkey Kong ports, so this one plays quite differently by comparison. It is a cool reminder that Mario was making the rounds on home computers well before most people ever touched an NES. Did anyone here grow up playing Mario on a Commodore before ever seeing the NES version?
