Found this clip about Bloodsport and it connects two things I love talking about here, classic movies and classic arcade games.
Bloodsport came out in 1988 and it is genuinely the film that turned Jean Claude Van Damme into a star. He was cast after producer Menahem Golan spotted him and offered him the lead, and the film went from a nearly shelved Hong Kong production on a tiny budget into a real box office hit. Early in the movie, Frank Dux, Van Damme's character, bonds with fellow fighter Ray Jackson over a match of the actual 1984 arcade game Karate Champ in a hotel lobby, complete with some classic back and forth trash talk about who is too young and who is too old for what they are each doing.
Here is a fun catch, the movie is supposed to take place before 1980 based on its own ending, but Karate Champ was not released until 1984, so that arcade cabinet should not have even existed yet in the story's timeline. It is one of the more charming goofs people still point out about this film. Bloodsport's legacy runs deeper than that scene too, since Mortal Kombat's creators openly modeled the character Johnny Cage on Van Damme's look from this exact movie after an actual deal to use Van Damme himself fell through.
