Long before smartphones, the biggest handheld battle was Atari Lynx vs Nintendo Game Boy.
Released in 1989, the Atari Lynx was a technological powerhouse. It featured a full-color backlit LCD screen, hardware sprite scaling, multiplayer support with the ComLynx cable, and even a reversible design for left- or right-handed players. In contrast, Nintendo's Game Boy used a monochrome screen and much simpler hardware.
Despite its impressive technology, the Lynx struggled with high battery consumption, a higher retail price, limited third-party support, and fierce competition from Nintendo's massive library of games. Atari's commercials often mocked the Game Boy's black-and-white display, but Nintendo's strong first-party lineup—especially Tetris, Super Mario Land, and Pokémon later on—helped Game Boy dominate the market.
