When I’m raking, my only goal is even coverage.
Not volume. Not curl shape. Just coating every strand.
I use my hands like a comb to smooth everything down first because:
If your hair isn’t already detangled and smoothed, raking takes way longer
Crossed or tangled strands lead to patchy gel application
You end up fighting your hair instead of working with it
At this stage, I’m actually reducing volume on purpose.
I’m not trying to create curls yet. I’m creating an even foundation.
Once everything is coated, then I lift the hair off the scalp.
That’s when curl stacking starts.
That’s when volume and shape come in.
Smooth first.
Coat evenly.
Then lift and scrunch.
Order matters more than people realize.
