Sidney Bechet was born on May 14th, 1897 and died on May 14th, 1959. This video features photographs of Sidney Bechet (some of them rarely seen), with a soundtrack of recordings that exemplify Bechet's creative genius both as a composer and a performer.
The recordings are from 78s in my collection, except for the last one, which is from an LP (it was not issued on 78). The six tracks featured are:-
1) Wild Cat Blues (recorded in 1923)
2) What Is This Thing Called Love (recorded in 1941)
3) Blue Horizon (recorded in 1944)
4) Si Tu Vois Ma Mère (If You See My Mother) (recorded in 1952)
5) Premier Bal (recorded in 1957)
6) Riverboat (recorded in 1964) *
*Track 6 is from "La Colline Du Delta" ("The Hillside on the Delta"), a ballet composed by Sidney Bechet that was recorded in 1964. The soprano sax is played by Claude Luter, with a symphony orchestra arranged and conducted by Gérard Calvi.
