Arthur Rosebery And His Kit Kat Dance Band play "Mississippi Melody", the first side the band recorded. It features a nice hot chorus for the brass section, after the rather stolid vocals by Tom Currie (this was the only side he made with the band).
Arthur Rosebery told me that it took him two weeks to write the arrangements for this and the other side, and as a result he decided that he wouldn’t write any more, leaving the arranging side of the business to the band's trombonist / trumpeter Paul Fenoulhet, who joined the outfit in January 1929.
Almost every musician in the band could play more than one type of instrument. Jim Risely is particularly versatile on this side, playing bass sax in the intro, then switching to brass bass, then to string bass (under the vocals), then back to brass bass!
