Shark sightings have soared this summer in Long Island Sound, and Connecticut fishermen say the growing population is creating new challenges on the water.
Brown sharks are native to Connecticut waters, but as their population has recovered, fishermen say sharks are increasingly following boats and taking hooked fish. Mike Roy, owner and operator of Reel Cast Charters, says the sharks are also damaging fishing tackle and adding to costs.
Black Hall Outfitters in Westbrook says encounters with sharks have become increasingly common for local fishermen. Roy also says the recovering shark population could be affecting smaller fish in Long Island Sound.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association is planning to release results from a new sandbar shark assessment in early 2027.
