Litchfield attorney Robert Fischer is free on $50,000 bond after his conviction in the 2021 killing of Matthew Bromley was overturned. Fischer was convicted by a jury in 2025 and had been behind bars since last June.

Prosecutors alleged Fischer confronted Bromley with a gun and shot him outside Fischer’s law office after the two got into a fight. Fischer has said Bromley followed him to his office, attacked him and threatened his life.

The Litchfield County State’s Attorney’s Office says it stands ready to retry Fischer if there is no further action on the appeal.
