The speech teacher instructed the class that if a student struggled to pronounce or read a word, the rest of the class had to sit quietly and let them sound it out. The teacher emphasized that only she was allowed to help the student.
A student named Johnny took his turn to read aloud and immediately got stuck on a word. Trying to prompt him, the teacher gently coaxed, “Johnny, sounds like... ? Johnny, sounds like... ?”
Unable to help himself, a young Shannon Sharpe blurted out to the room, “Sounds like Johnny can't read.”
The teacher immediately kicked Sharpe out of the room, telling him not to come back until he learned how to properly talk to people. Sharpe jokingly notes that he ended up being kicked out of that class for two weeks as a result.
