MOST DEADLY HIT EVER 😳
The collision between Pittsburgh Steelers safety Ryan Clark and Baltimore Ravens running back Willis McGahee during the 2008 AFC Championship Game (played on January 18, 2009) remains one of the most violent and famous hits in NFL history.
With less than four minutes remaining in the fourth quarter and the Steelers leading 23-14, Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco threw a short pass across the middle to McGahee. McGahee caught the ball, took two steps, and lowered his pads just as Clark launched forward at full speed, leading with his shoulder. The resulting helmet-to-helmet impact sounded like a "cannonball" across the stadium. The force caused McGahee to fumble the ball, which was recovered by the Steelers to seal their victory.
Left motionless on the turf for several minutes, McGahee suffered a severe concussion. Medical staff had to immobilize his neck and cart him off the field on a stretcher. He was hospitalized overnight but thankfully had movement in all extremities and made a full recovery.
Clark was also severely dazed and suffered a concussion, later admitting he had a 90-second blackout gap in his memory of the event. He had to be helped off the field by trainers.
At the time, the hit was determined to be completely legal and clean under 2008 NFL rules because McGahee had established himself as a runner rather than a defenseless receiver. However, the frightening nature of the double-knockout served as a major catalyst for the NFL to drastically alter its player safety rules in subsequent seasons, heavily penalizing and fining similar helmet-to-helmet contact.
