The "Jim McMahon slam" refers to one of the most infamous cheap shots in NFL history, which occurred on November 23, 1986. During a game between the Chicago Bears and the Green Bay Packers, Packers defensive lineman Charles Martin grabbed Bears quarterback Jim McMahon from behind and violently body-slammed him onto the turf.

McMahon suffered a torn rotator cuff from the impact, ending his 1986 season. The defending Super Bowl champion Bears never quite recovered their momentum, and many analysts believe this hit permanently altered the trajectory of McMahon's career.

Adding to the controversy, Martin had been wearing a towel on the field with a "hit list" of Bears player numbers written on it, which included McMahon's #9. Martin was immediately ejected from the game. NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle later handed him a two-game suspension, which was the first multi-game suspension for an on-field incident in modern NFL history.
