Nate Washington TD Catch Over Referee 🤯
During a Week 4 matchup on September 29, 2013, Tennessee Titans wide receiver Nate Washington caught a 77-yard touchdown pass after colliding with and running directly over a referee who was inadvertently positioned right in his path downfield.
Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick threw a deep pass down the sideline to Washington, who had beaten Jets cornerback Antonio Cromartie.
As Washington tracked the ball, the backpedaling field judge was unable to get out of the way. Washington ran straight through the official, knocking him to the turf, but remarkably maintained his concentration to secure the ball and stay on his feet to cruise into the end zone.
“I’m looking at the ref and saying, ‘What the heck are you doing here?’” noted Cromartie in a report by the New York Post, as the official accidentally acted as the primary screen on the play. Because referees are legally considered part of the field, no penalty was called, and the touchdown stood.
