Land Ark Homes is building an all net zero ready and net zero community in West Port, Ontario. The journey to net zero started when Stephen Rolston of Land Ark realized there is no gas in West Port, Ontario. He says he could have buried propane tanks in the yards, but "that would be like going back to the dark ages."
And he was very intrigued about he idea of building affordable, super energy efficient homes that could be optionally solar powered.
So he enlisted energy experts, got some advice from other net zero builders and learned fast. As this filming Land Ark has built 73 net zero ready and net zero labelled homes.
The result is something he always wanted, super high quality homes in a walkable village - like combining your cottage and your home in one!
We wanted to know Land Ark's secret sauce for getting to net zero so we got a tour from Kevin Rankin, Land Ark's construction manager. He says there was a learning curve at first, but that he now feels they have found an affordable pathway to building people's forever homes that will cost them very little to operate.
These homes are super comfortable, provided clean fresh air and thanks to heat pump technology that heats and cools, all of the homes have air conditioning, perfect for those increasing summer heat waves.
