Jesus rebuked the Pharisees in Mark 7:8-9:
"You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to human traditions. You have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God in order to observe your own traditions."
We need to be very careful we're not doing the same thing.
The entire Protestant Reformation was built on the principle that Scripture alone is our final authority. Not church tradition. Not historical consensus. Not what the majority has always believed.
Sola Scriptura. Scripture alone.
The Bereans in Acts 17:11 are commended because they "examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true." They didn't just accept Paul's teaching because he was an apostle. They tested it against Scripture.
That's the standard. That's what we're supposed to do.
So when someone challenges the majority view with Biblical arguments, we shouldn't demand repentance. We should be Bereans. We should examine the Scriptures to see if what they're saying is true.
Because tradition is a conversation partner, not the final authority. Scripture is.
