Most Christians think unity means everyone thinks the same, votes the same, agrees on everything.

But Paul says something different in Ephesians 4.

He tells believers to maintain the unity of the Spirit. Not create it. Maintain it. The unity already exists. Your job is to protect it.

And then immediately after establishing that unity exists, Paul talks about diversity. Different gifts. Different roles. The church grows up by having all these voices work together.

Conflict is not the enemy of unity. Uniformity is.

When a church tries to manufacture sameness, it works against the Spirit. But when a church protects the unity that already exists while making room for diverse gifts, it matures.

This changes everything about how we think about disagreement in the church.

$Spiritual Warfare Is Communal When most Christians think about Ephesians 6, they picture an individual believer standing alone in battle against demons. But thats not what Paul describes. Paul has spent five chapters talking about the church as a unified body. Then he says, put on the armor of God so you may be able to stand. Stand. Not attack. The church is holding ground against deception and division—the things that fracture unity. And the armor? Truth, righteousness, peace, faith, salvation. These protect a unified community from forces that want to tear it apart. Paul gets this imagery from Isaiah 59, where God wears the armor. Now the church wears it. Spiritual warfare is communal standing firm against powers that thrive on division. Every time you choose reconciliation over hostility, youre engaging in warfare.
