50 Scientists from Scientist Rebellion protested in front of the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure demanding an immediate decarbonization of the transport sector.
30 scientists from Scientist Rebellion blocked the entrances of the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure in Berlin, Germany, on Tuesday, 18th of October, at around 7:30 am. In addition, around 20 scientists blocked the streets around the ministry at three points. The academics, who traveled from 12 European countries to Germany, demanded that the government stop blocking a national speed limit and reintroduce the highly popular 9-Euro ticket for public transport.
"We demand from the German government an immediate speed limit of 100 km/h on the highways and an affordable 9-Euro ticket for public transport. The Ministry of Transport has failed for years to achieve any significant reduction in emissions. In this energy and cost of living crisis there is an urgent need to cut fossil fuels and enable affordable mobility," said Dr. Nana Maria Grüning, molecular biologist at Charité, University Clinic Berlin, Germany.
"As scientists we understand the existential threat of the climate crisis. The 1,5 degree target is no longer realistically achievable. It is high time that we move towards sustainable mobility. In fact, the climate crisis is the strongest motivation for people in Germany to change their own mobility behavior. This is something the government should really support," said Dr. Sébastien Triquenaux, engineer at CNRS in France.
"Introducing 100 km/h speed limits on motorways is the order of the day. It significantly reduces the number of accidents as well as fuel consumption and it improves traffic flow. Every day of delay costs lives," said Prof. Dr. Andreas Knie, mobility and traffic researcher at the Social Science Research Center Berlin.
